KATESON LAUNCHES HERBAL DYED CLOTHING LINE FOR BABIES

Organic cotton baby line is hand-dyed in Ayurveda herbs chosen for their wellness properties by a cooperative that provides economic opportunity to farmers, tribal groups and dyers

Ventura, CA: Kateson, a new brand of sustainable baby products, launched today, offering a line of ethically sourced, certified organic cotton baby clothes hand-dyed in Ayurveda botanicals chosen for their wellness properties by a handloom cooperative in India.

Knowing that textile dyeing is one of the most environmentally destructive parts of manufacturing clothes, Kateson aims to do its part by offering parents a choice in baby clothing made from cotton and herbs that are renewable and biodegradable, while ensuring the health and economic independence of farmers, tribal groups and dyers involved in the production.

“While pregnant with our daughter and on the hunt for safe clothes and toys, I found it strange that while there is a plethora of organic clothing available, there was no mention of the dyes used to color the fabric,” said Tanya Thorpe, founder of Kateson with her husband, Josh. “At Kateson, we’re proud to offer baby clothes that come from a dyeing process that is completely free of synthetic chemicals and toxic irritants – perfect for a babies’ thinner, more porous and absorbent skin.”

Kateson’s baby clothes are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton hand-dyed in medicinally rich plants that are organically grown, wild-crafted and sustainably harvested by local tribal groups and cultivators. The herbs used are based on Ayurveda, the holistic medicinal system of health invented in India 5000 years ago. The current main herbs used in Kateson’s dyes are Turmeric (Yellow), Indigo (Blue), Holy Basil (Olive Green), Neem (Beige), Vetiver (Grey) and Red Sandalwood (Pink). The dye water waste is used to nourish the land and the fabric produced is organic, sustainable and biodegradable.

Kateson works in partnership with a non-profit cooperative in India that provides employment, training and women empowerment programs to weavers and dyers displaced by the declining hand weaving and hand-dyeing tradition. They are paid a fair wage so they can enjoy a better standard of living and preserve their heritage and culture.

Kateson debuts with a line of bodysuit sets and a curated selection of naturally colored sustainable wood toys and coconut oil based 100% natural soaps.

Kateson is also a proud supporter of the non-profit charitable organization Every Mother Counts, which provides maternal health programs around the world. For every Kateson garment sold, the company donates 5% of proceeds to Every Mother Counts.

“Ayurvedic herbal dyed clothing has traditionally been used in India as a means to protect the wearer”, said Tanya, “so we think Every Mother Counts will make a great partner to our cause of making safe clothing while providing employment opportunities to families in need.”
